The shield of arms of West Friesland occupies the central field, displaying two rampant lions passant guardant arranged in two rows, each separated by a horizontal bar, within a pointed escutcheon. The shield is surmounted by an elaborate mural or provincial crown with floral ornaments. Flanking the shield on either side are decorative sprigs of olive or laurel, curving outward toward the beaded border that frames the entire design. |

West Friesland maintained its own municipal coinage within the Dutch Republic's decentralized mint structure, and the duit was the workhorse of that system — the smallest denomination in daily use, spent on bread, ferry crossings, and market tolls. By the 1740s, the proliferation of provincial duit issues had become a persistent irritant to the States General, which repeatedly attempted to rationalize coinage across the seven provinces without success. Counterfeiting of copper duits was rampant throughout the mid-eighteenth century, particularly from clandestine operations in the Southern Netherlands.
