Java fell under British administration when Stamford Raffles was appointed Lieutenant-Governor in 1811, following a surprisingly swift military campaign against the Dutch-Napoleonic forces on the island. These tin duits were struck to maintain continuity with the existing Dutch colonial monetary system rather than impose a new currency — the duit denomination had circulated in the Dutch East Indies for over a century. Raffles returned Java to the Dutch in 1816 under the terms of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty, making the entire British coinage output for the island a window of fewer than five years.
