Nijmegen exercised its municipal minting rights with particular stubbornness during the early seventeenth century, producing copper small change at a time when the newly independent Dutch provinces were still hammering out monetary agreements under the Union of Utrecht. The city's autonomous coinage was a source of friction with the States General, which repeatedly attempted to standardize duit production across the provinces.

This issue falls within the three-year span before Nijmegen's municipal mint effectively ceased independent copper production under increasing federal pressure.
