Nijmegen held the right to strike its own copper small change as one of the principal cities of Gelderland, a privilege that persisted well into the seventeenth century despite repeated efforts by the States General to rationalize coinage across the nascent Dutch Republic. The duit was the workhorse of everyday retail transactions — eight to the stuiver — and municipal issues like this one circulated alongside provincial and VOC-struck pieces with little friction.
The 1604 date places this piece early in the Twelve Years' Truce negotiations, when Nijmegen remained a strategically sensitive border city only recently secured from Spanish control following the Union of Utrecht.
