Zeeland's duit issues of this period circulated heavily throughout the province's maritime trading networks, passing through the hands of sailors, dock workers, and merchants at VOC-connected ports. The Dutch East India Company, chartered in 1602, absorbed enormous quantities of small provincial copper coinage as petty change in its domestic operations, which is precisely why worn survivors of this type outnumber well-preserved ones by a considerable margin.
The span of production across four decades under shifting wartime finances — the Dutch Republic was still fighting Spain for the entirety of this coin's minting life — reflects the pragmatic continuity of provincial mint authority rather than any centralized monetary planning from The Hague.
