| Obverse description | Large draped bust of Francesco I d'Este facing left, with flowing long curly hair, rendered in high relief in the Baroque manner. The duke is depicted wearing elaborate armour with ornate pauldron and decorative breastplate visible at the truncation. A fine inner beaded border frames the field, with the abbreviated Latin legend disposed around the periphery, interrupted by small star-shaped ornaments. The portrait displays exceptional artistry characteristic of the Modenese ducal mint of the period. |
