Piedfort coins — struck at double the normal planchet weight — were never intended for circulation. Dutch provincial mints produced them as presentation pieces, distributed to magistrates, foreign dignitaries, and mint officials as ceremonial gifts. Zeeland's mint at Middelburg was among the more active provincial facilities in producing such pieces, partly due to the province's sustained income from VOC trade revenues funding civic patronage through much of the eighteenth century.
The Type 2 designation marks a revision to the cartouche framing the date — a subtle but cataloguable die change that distinguishes it from the earlier emission. Delmonte's classification remains the standard reference for separating these varieties.
