The Ducaton "Silver Rider" is one of the longest-lived coin types in Dutch monetary history, with its equestrian design tracing back to the provincial coinage of the seventeenth century. By the time Utrecht struck these final examples, the Batavian Republic had been declared under French revolutionary influence following the 1795 Patriot coup — making this issue a transitional artifact, struck on inherited dies by a government that was actively dismantling the federal monetary system it had inherited from the old Republic of the Seven United Provinces.
Utrecht's mint continued production only through 1798, when centralization efforts effectively ended provincial striking authority.
