背面描述 Within a dotted inner circle, the crowned arms of the Dutch Generality displayed centrally, supported on each side by a rampant lion wearing a crown. The heraldic composition is executed in the bold baroque style typical of Dutch provincial silver coinage of the period. A circumferential Latin legend occupies the outer ring, enclosing the design, with the date incorporated into the legend at the base. The motto CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT, meaning 'By unity, small things grow,' reflects the ideals of the Dutch Republic.

附加信息

Zeeland's ducatons were struck in direct competition with those of Holland and other provinces, each mint jealously guarding its share of a lucrative silver trade coin market fed by Spanish American bullion flowing through Antwerp and later Amsterdam. The province maintained its own mint at Middelburg, which operated with considerable autonomy throughout the seventeenth century despite persistent efforts by the States-General to rationalize coinage across the Republic.

The Davenport EC II reference places this squarely among the rider ducatons that circulated widely in the Levant trade and Baltic commerce, where Dutch silver commanded a reliable premium over locally issued coin.
