| Obverse description | St. Mark, nimbed and robed, is depicted seated to the left, extending a staff surmounted by a cross and pennant toward the Doge Paolo Renier, who kneels in ducal robes at right in a gesture of reverence and investiture. The scene is rendered in high relief in the Venetian late-Baroque tradition. The legend encircles the composition, identifying the Doge by name and title. Mintmaster's initials appear in the exergue below the central design. |

Paolo Renier was the penultimate Doge of Venice, governing a republic already hollowed out by two centuries of commercial decline and Napoleonic pressure building on its western borders. The ducato issued under his reign was among the last silver strikes of any real monetary weight the city-state would produce — within eight years of his death in 1789, Napoleon would end the republic entirely without a battle, the Great Council simply voting itself out of existence in May 1797.
