Obverse description Full-length frontal effigy of Ferrante II Gonzaga in armour, holding a sword, with head turned to the right, standing within a beaded inner circle. The figure is rendered in the characteristic late Renaissance hammered style with fine detail on the armour. The legend FERDINANDVS : GONZAGA is inscribed in Latin capitals around the periphery, separated from the central design by the beaded circle.

Reverse description Quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of the Gonzaga family, surmounted by a flared princely crown, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The four quarters display the dynastic devices of the Gonzaga in finely struck relief, characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the Italian Renaissance period. The circular legend DOMINVS GVASTALLA runs in Latin capitals between the beaded inner circle and the rope-bordered outer rim.
