Obverse description Central field depicts the rampant lion of Bologna passant-reguardant, facing left, holding a vexillum (standard) with a wavy banner in its right forepaw, with a heraldic shield bearing the Bolognese arms at its feet. The lion is rendered in bold medieval relief with an elaborate flowing mane. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the circular Latin legend reading BONONIA DOCET disposed around the periphery, separated by annulets.

A beaded inner circle surrounds the central figure, with the circular Latin legend · S · PETRVS · APOSTOLVS disposed around the periphery, punctuated by annulets.
