正面描述 Standing figure of St. Mark at left, robed and nimbed, presenting a vexillum (ducal staff) to the kneeling Doge Marco Barbarigo at right; the legend DVX appears vertically between the two figures in the field. The composition reflects the traditional Venetian ducato iconography, symbolizing the divine investiture of the doge's authority. The outer legend names the doge and the patron saint of Venice in Latin, interrupted by pellets as word dividers. The hammered flan displays the characteristic irregular outline typical of medieval Venetian gold coinage.

附加信息

Marco Barbarigo's dogeship lasted barely fourteen months, from August 1485 until his death in August 1486, making this one of the shortest reigns in the later history of the Venetian Republic. The ducato itself had been the backbone of Mediterranean trade finance since its introduction in 1284, accepted at face value from the Levant to the North Sea with a gold fineness that Venice enforced with remarkable consistency across two centuries of production.

The brevity of Barbarigo's reign directly limits surviving quantities — fewer dies were prepared and fewer coins struck than for virtually any doge of his period.
