Additional information

Girolamo Priuli served as Doge from 1559 to 1567, a period dominated by Venice's deepening anxieties over Ottoman expansion in the eastern Mediterranean and the slow erosion of its Levantine trade routes. His dogeship produced relatively few silver ducato issues, and CNI VII#91 represents one of the tighter series in the sequence. The ducato denomination itself had been repositioned in Venetian monetary policy across the sixteenth century as the gold ducat migrated to a purely notional accounting function.
