Additional information

Zsigmond Báthori was made Prince of Transylvania at age nine in 1581 and spent most of his reign in an impossible position between Ottoman suzerainty and Habsburg alliance. This ducat dates to the year he was manoeuvring toward the Christian League, a decision that would pull Transylvania into the Long Turkish War the following year and ultimately destabilize his rule through four abdications. The Resch 129–130 distinction likely reflects minor die variation across his prolific gold output, as Transylvanian minting under Zsigmond was active but administratively inconsistent.
