Vladislav I — known also as Vlaicu Vodă — began issuing coinage shortly after consolidating Wallachian independence from Hungarian suzerainty, making these ducats among the earliest indigenous coins struck in the principality. The Hungarian influence on the denomination name reflects the political reality of the period: Wallachia operated within the orbit of the Angevin kingdom even as its rulers asserted their own authority. Type IIa is distinguished from adjacent varieties in the MBR sequence by minor die characteristics rather than substantive design revision — catalogue separation here is a matter of specialist precision.
