West Friesland's ducat coinage occupied an odd corner of the Dutch monetary system — the province struck its own gold under the authority of the States of West Friesland rather than through the unified Holland mint, producing minor but documentable die variations across the series. The "square on flower" designation distinguishes this variety by a specific privy mark arrangement used by the Hoorn or Enkhuizen mints during this window, a detail that separates it from otherwise nearly identical issues catalogued under 93.1 and 93.2.
Dutch ducats of this period circulated far beyond the Republic's borders, particularly in Baltic and Levantine trade.
