Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold was born on 29 November 1767, the son of Simon August, Count of Lippe. The birth of a male heir to a small German county was occasion enough to commission a commemorative ducat — a practice common among the petty courts of the Holy Roman Empire, where such pieces served diplomatic as much as celebratory purposes, gifted to neighboring rulers and court officials. Simon August had already established Lippe as a surprisingly active minting authority for its size.
Leopold would outlive his father and rule as Prince of Lippe from 1789 until his death in 1851, an 62-year reign that made this birth ducat a genuinely consequential piece in retrospect.
