Rudolf II relocated his imperial court from Vienna to Prague in 1583, transforming the city into the effective capital of the Habsburg empire for roughly three decades. The Prague mint operated under this elevated status, producing ducats that circulated across the breadth of Central European trade networks rather than serving purely local exchange. Rudolf's increasingly erratic rule during these years — marked by his 1609 capitulation to the Bohemian estates through the Letter of Majesty, granting unprecedented religious freedoms — created the political fractures that would eventually erupt into the Thirty Years' War within a decade of his death.
