Obverse description A standing armored knight in full three-quarter armor occupies the central field, facing left, holding a bundle of arrows in his right hand and a sword upright in his left hand, symbolizing the union of the Dutch provinces. The knight stands atop the crowned shield of Zeeland, bearing the provincial arms of a lion issuing from waves. The peripheral legend is rendered in Latin capitals within a toothed border, reading MO · NO · ARG · PRO · CON · FŒ · BELG · COM · ZEEL ·, with a rook mintmark denoting the Middelburg Mint. The overall design follows the standard Dutch provincial ducat type, struck here as a piedfort with considerably greater depth of relief.
