Paul II — born Pietro Barbo, a Venetian merchant's nephew — came to the pontificate in 1464 with a personal obsession for gems, cameos, and coined gold that contemporaries found unseemly in a pope. His collection of ancient coins and antiquities was extraordinary by any measure, which lends a certain irony to holding one of his own issues. The Venetian ducal tradition ran deep in his background, and the papal ducat under his reign maintained the high fineness expected of serious international trade coinage.
He died in 1471, possibly of a stroke, though contemporary gossip was less charitable.
