Additional information

Nuremberg lost its status as a Free Imperial City in 1806 when Napoleon's reorganization of German territories dissolved the Holy Roman Empire and absorbed the city into Bavaria. This piece, struck at the turn of the century, comes from the final years of that independence — a civic body already aware its autonomy was precarious. New Year's presentation pieces of this type were a distinctly Nuremberg tradition, distributed as gifts by the city council and carrying real political weight as tokens of civic continuity.

The silver pattern designation under Kelln 84a distinguishes it from the standard ducat issue in gold.
