Nuremberg's New Year ducats were a municipal gift-giving tradition, struck specifically for distribution by city officials to mark the turn of the year — not monetary instruments in any functional sense. By 1800, however, the city's independence was already collapsing; Nuremberg was absorbed into Bavaria in 1806, making this issue one of the last produced under the authority of a free imperial city that had maintained autonomy since the 13th century.
The Kelln 84b designation distinguishes this from closely related die pairings within the same presentation series.
