The "Isargold" designation on this ducat refers to gold allegedly sourced from the Isar River, a marketing claim — or at minimum a romantic one — attached to Bavarian gold ducats of this period to distinguish them in trade. Whether the alluvial content was genuinely local or the label was applied loosely is a question the minting records at Munich do not cleanly resolve.
Maximilian III Joseph had inherited a electorate bankrupted by his father's catastrophic involvement in the War of Austrian Succession. The Seven Years' War ran concurrent with this issue's production dates, and fiscal pressure on the Munich court was acute throughout.
