| Obverse description | Unadorned bare head of King Maximilian II of Bavaria facing right, rendered in fine relief with naturalistically detailed hair. The effigy is centered within a beaded border, with the engraver's initials 'J.R.' appearing in small characters beneath the truncation. The circular legend reads 'MAXIMILIAN II KOENIG V. BAYERN' distributed around the upper and lateral fields, separated by the portrait. The portrait style reflects the neoclassical tradition favored by the Munich school of die engraving in the mid-nineteenth century. |

| Reverse description | A large royal Bavarian crown, rendered in high relief with a prominent cross surmounting its arch, occupies the central field. The crown is encircled by a wreath of olive or laurel branches, their stems tied at the base with a decorative ribbon bow. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The field is otherwise blank, with no inscriptions or additional devices, lending the composition an austere, heraldic character appropriate to a pattern or essay piece. |
