Obverse description Central field displays the arms of Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg — a quartered heraldic shield surmounted by a cardinal's galero with pendant tassels and a crosshatched archiepiscopal cross. The date 1521 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery of the coin, identifying the issuer as Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg. The die work is characteristic of early sixteenth-century hammered gold coinage from the Salzburg mint, with bold if somewhat irregular lettering.
