Obverse description Central field occupied by the elaborate cursive cipher NB — the interlaced monogram of Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt — rendered in high relief with foliate and scrollwork embellishments in a Baroque calligraphic style. The letters are entwined and decorated with acanthus-like leaf sprays emerging from the junctions. The monogram fills virtually the entire field, which is bounded by a plain raised rim with no peripheral legend.

Reverse description Five-line German inscription in serifed capital letters filling the entire field within a raised inner rim, reading ALLES / IN DER / WELT / THUT MAN / VOR DAS / GELD — a proverbial motto translating as 'Everything in the world is done for money.' The lettering is boldly cut in relief, distributed evenly across six lines, and enclosed by a plain raised border. No additional devices or ornaments accompany the text. The field between and around the letters shows the characteristic smooth surface of a struck pattern piece.
