Obverse description Draped bust of Landgrave Louis VIII facing right, wearing a finely detailed wig with curled locks and an ornate military cloak with decorative clasps. The portrait is rendered in high relief with considerable artistic detail. The circular Latin legend reads LUDOVICUS VIII D G LANDGRAV HASS around the upper periphery. The engraver's initials A.S. appear below the truncation in the lower field.

Reverse description Elaborately rendered quartered coat of arms of Hesse-Darmstadt, displaying a lion passant and a cross among the quarterings, supported by decorative acanthus-scroll mantling on either side. The shield is surmounted by a large princely crown. The motto legend SINCERE & CONSTANTER curves around the upper periphery of the coin, flanking the crowned arms on both sides.
