附加信息

Louis VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt was an enthusiastic military commander who spent much of his reign hiring out his troops as auxiliaries — a practice that generated reliable income for the landgraviate and funded the Darmstadt court's considerable cultural ambitions. Ducat production during his reign drew on this mercenary revenue stream rather than any significant domestic mineral wealth, Hesse having no meaningful gold deposits of its own.

The Fr#1217 reference places this firmly in Friedberg's *Gold Coins of the World*, which lists it among the smaller German state ducats of the mid-18th century — a category notable more for variety than volume. The .986 fineness matches the standard Reichsdukat specification that had governed German gold coinage since the late 16th century.
