Louis Rudolph ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel only from 1731 until his death in March 1735, a short reign that left limited time for an extensive coinage. This piece is a mule — a coin struck from dies not originally intended to be paired — which in the context of small German princely mints often reflected pragmatic die management rather than any deliberate commemorative intent. When a working die remained usable and a matched partner was unavailable or damaged, the minting staff paired what they had.
Fr#677 is among the scarcer ducats of the Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel series precisely because mule combinations were never planned in quantity.
