The Peace of Ryswick, signed in September 1697, ended the Nine Years' War between Louis XIV and the Grand Alliance — but this ducat is dated 1696, suggesting it was struck in anticipation of negotiations already underway rather than in celebration of a concluded peace. Lothar Franz von Schönborn had been Archbishop-Elector of Mainz since 1695 and was deeply involved in imperial diplomacy throughout the conflict.
The fineness of .986 places this squarely within the established imperial ducat standard, though Mainz output in gold during this period was modest and commemorative in character rather than monetary.
