The Peace of Ryswick, signed in September 1697, ended the Nine Years' War and forced Louis XIV to relinquish most of his territorial gains since 1678. Lothair Francis von Schönborn, as Archbishop-Elector of Mainz and Archchancellor of the Holy Roman Empire, occupied a position central to imperial diplomacy — making a commemorative strike from his mint a natural assertion of his role in the settlement. The dating of 1696 suggests preparation or anticipation ahead of the final treaty, possibly struck to mark the preliminary negotiations at Ryswick that began that year.
