Additional information

Leopold Wilhelm was appointed Bishop of Strasbourg in 1625 at age thirteen — a purely political placement by the Habsburgs to secure the strategically vital see against Protestant encroachment. He never took holy orders and spent most of his adult life as a military commander rather than a cleric. This ducat was struck in 1632, the same year Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden swept through Alsace, temporarily wresting control of much of the region from Habsburg influence. That Leopold Wilhelm's mint continued operating at all that year is notable.

Fr#238 ducats from this issue are genuinely scarce in any condition, reflecting severely disrupted production during the Thirty Years' War.
