Baden's Rheingolddukat series was explicitly struck from alluvial gold panned from the Rhine River — a practice with deep regional roots that the Grand Duchy formalized into a prestige coinage. The gold's origin was not incidental; it was the entire point, and contemporary buyers paid a premium over face value to acquire pieces whose material could be traced to local rivers.
Leopold I authorized this issue as part of a broader effort to assert Baden's monetary identity during a period when German states were under increasing pressure toward currency unification. The KM#201 type spans only four years before the series lapsed.
