Leopold Anton von Firmian became Archbishop of Salzburg in 1727 largely through imperial favour rather than ecclesiastical distinction, and his tenure is now inseparable from one of the most brutal acts of religious expulsion in 18th-century Central Europe. In 1731 he ordered the expulsion of some 20,000 Protestant Salzburgers — Lutherans who had quietly maintained their faith for generations in the alpine valleys — giving them weeks to liquidate property and leave in winter. The episode scandalized Protestant Europe and drew Frederick William I of Prussia to offer the exiles resettlement in East Prussia.
Ducats struck across this decade were produced at the Salzburg mint while the expulsion's diplomatic fallout was still unresolved.
