| Obverse description | Draped bust of Pope Leo X facing left, wearing the mantum (papal cope) with richly detailed vestments and the zucchetto (white skullcap), rendered in the bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Italian coinage. A decorative grotesque mask appears at the base of the bust, a distinctive artistic element of this issue. The effigy is set within an inner beaded border. The Latin legend surrounding the portrait reads LEO X PONTIFEX MAXIMVS, identifying the sitter as Leo the Tenth, Supreme Pontiff. |
