Beschrijving voorzijde Papal coat of arms of Julius II displayed centrally in the field, surmounted by the crossed keys of St. Peter and the pontifical tiara, symbolising papal authority. The surrounding legend in Latin identifies the issuing pontiff. The design is characteristic of hammered gold coinage struck under papal auspices at Bologna during the early sixteenth century.

Aanvullende informatie

Julius II seized Bologna from the Bentivoglio family in 1506 after a rapid military campaign he led personally — one of the more remarkable instances of a pope commanding troops in the field. The Bolognese mint was re-established under direct papal authority almost immediately, and this ducat belongs to that newly consolidated issue.

Julius spent much of his pontificate financing military campaigns to recover and consolidate the Papal States, and Bolognese gold fed directly into that effort. Fr#332a is distinguished from the related 332 by minor die characteristics that Friedberg treats as a discrete variety.
