Additional information

Joseph II did not rule alone in 1764–65. Following the death of Francis I in August 1765, Maria Theresa made Joseph co-regent and Holy Roman Emperor, but real authority remained hers. These ducats were struck during the co-regency transition, a constitutional arrangement as much political theater as governance — Maria Theresa never surrendered the levers of Habsburg finance.

Vienna's ducat production in this period drew on established .986 fine gold standards maintained since the late seventeenth century, the same fineness that made Austrian ducats trusted tender across Central European trade networks well before any formal standardization.
