John Ernest II ruled Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach for less than two years before his death in 1638, making this Spruchdukat one of the briefest-reign issues in the proliferating Ernestine Saxon ducal series. The Spruchdukat format — a ducat bearing a personal motto or biblical inscription rather than purely dynastic imagery — was a distinctly Protestant German tradition, used by the Ernestine line as much for devotional gift-giving as for circulation. These pieces were frequently presented at court as New Year's gifts or christening tokens, which explains why survivors are often found in grades inconsistent with commercial use.
