Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1560 to 1586, presiding over the archbishopric during the height of confessional tension in the Holy Roman Empire. His tenure coincided with the enforcement of the Peace of Augsburg, which required ecclesiastical rulers to determine the religion of their subjects — a politically fraught position for a prince-archbishop sitting on one of the wealthiest mining revenues in Central Europe. Salzburg's salt and silver trade funded ducats of this quality without difficulty.
