The Trautson family held comital mining rights in the Falken region of Lower Austria, and their gold ducats of the 1630s were struck during the Thirty Years' War — a period when private lordly coinages proliferated across the Holy Roman Empire as central authority fractured and regional magnates asserted fiscal prerogatives. Johann Franz von Trautson-Falkenstein was among the more prominent Austrian nobles of his generation, serving the Habsburg court while simultaneously exercising the kind of independent minting privilege that the Emperor would spend the following decades systematically dismantling.
Friesenbichler 897 is the standard reference, but confirmed survivors are sparse enough that each new auction appearance updates the population record.
