| Obverse description | Youthful uncrowned bust of James VI facing left, depicted as a child-king wearing a ruffled lace collar and a draped mantle, rendered in high relief characteristic of late 16th-century Scottish hammered coinage. A small crown appears above the legend at the top of the field. The Latin circumscription reads IACOBVS 6 DEI GRA REX SCOTORVM, disposed around the entire periphery of the coin, with pellet stops separating the legend elements. The portrait conveys a notably juvenile physiognomy consistent with the king's age at the time of this coinage, executed in the robust if somewhat crude style typical of the Edinburgh Mint's hammer-struck gold issues. |
