| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned bust of King James V in high relief, wearing a jewelled crown and richly detailed Renaissance-era armour with an ornate collar visible at the truncation. The effigy is rendered in a bold, slightly crude hammered style characteristic of mid-16th-century Scottish coinage. The portrait is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading from upper left. The date 1540 appears within the legend. |
