Utrecht began striking ducats to the Hungarian standard in the late sixteenth century as Dutch merchants demanded a gold coin acceptable across Central European trade networks. The "Hungarian type" designation reflects a deliberate imitation of the Hungarian ducat's weight and fineness, which had circulated as a trusted trade currency from Budapest to the Baltic for over a century before Dutch provinces began producing their own versions.
The 1591 date places this piece in the early phase of Utrecht's independent coinage authority during the Revolt against Spain, when provincial mints operated with considerable autonomy. Delmonte G#969 is notably scarce in this early date range.
