Hieronymus von Colloredo ruled Salzburg as Prince-Archbishop from 1772 until Napoleon's forces effectively ended the ecclesiastical principality in 1803 — making him the last of that ancient line. He is remembered less for his coinage than for his famously acrimonious relationship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whom he employed, humiliated, and ultimately dismissed in 1781. The broad date range of this issue reflects a long archiepiscopal reign cut short not by death but by secularization under the pressure of French Revolutionary reorganization of the Holy Roman Empire's ecclesiastical territories.
