Herman Diederik van Bronckhorst inherited Batenburg under conditions of sustained political pressure — the barony sat squarely in the contested Guelders region during the Dutch Revolt, and small lordships like this one had to mint aggressively to assert any meaningful autonomy. The right to strike gold coinage was both a financial tool and a declaration that the lord remained a sovereign actor despite the chaos unfolding around him.
Delmonte's classification of this type as G#696 places it among the rarer baronial gold issues of the northern Netherlands. Batenburg's output was never large.
