Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Duke Gustav Adolphus of Mecklenburg-Güstrow facing right, with long flowing hair and lace collar, rendered in the Baroque portrait style typical of mid-17th-century German ducal coinage. The effigy occupies the central field within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend reads D G GVSTAV ADOLPHUS DUX MECKL, identifying the ruler by name and title. Dots serve as word separators throughout the legend. The overall execution reflects the hammered technique characteristic of this period.

Aanvullende informatie

Gustav Adolphus of Mecklenburg-Güstrow — not to be confused with the Swedish king of the same name — ruled a duchy that had been administratively separated from Mecklenburg-Schwerin since the 1621 partition, itself a consequence of the tangled inheritance disputes that plagued the Mecklenburg line across the Thirty Years' War period. His ducal coinage was modest in output, and the three-year window of this particular ducat issue reflects the brevity of his reign, which ended with his death in 1695 — though the striking of this type ceased well before that.
