| Obverse description | Central field features the quartered arms of the Archbishopric of Mainz and the personal coat of arms of Archbishop Georg Friedrich von Greiffenklau zu Vollraths, arranged in an ornate cruciform shield with elaborate baroque strapwork flourishes at each angle. Star-shaped ornaments punctuate the design between the arms of the cross. The date is divided and incorporated into the field. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads GEORG FRID D G ARCHIEPS MOGVNT S R I ARCHICANC ET PRIN EL, identifying the archbishop as Elector and Arch-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire. |

| Additional information |
George Frederick of Greiffenklau zu Vollraths held the archbishopric for barely two years, dying in September 1629 after an episcopate defined almost entirely by the grinding pressures of the Thirty Years' War. Mainz itself would fall to Swedish forces under Gustav Adolf just two years after his death. Issues from his short reign are scarce by simple arithmetic — the mint had no occasion to produce in volume for a see already hemorrhaging resources to military contributions and refugee displacement.
