Additional information

The Piast dukes of Liegnitz-Brieg occupied an increasingly precarious position after the Thirty Years' War. Georg III, Ludwig IV, and Christian were ruling jointly under the feudal arrangements that characterized the fragmented Silesian duchies — but Habsburg pressure to absorb the territories had been building for decades. This joint coinage reflects a deliberate assertion of dynastic continuity at a moment when that continuity was under direct threat from Vienna.

The line died out in 1675 with Georg Wilhelm, at which point the Habsburgs immediately incorporated Liegnitz-Brieg into Bohemia, exactly as they had long intended.
