Additional information

Frederik V took the Danish throne in 1746, the same year this ducat was struck, making it a first-year issue from a reign that would last until 1766. The Danish ducat at this period was minted primarily for trade and diplomatic payments rather than domestic circulation — gold coinage of this fineness rarely passed through ordinary commercial hands. Production figures for the Copenhagen mint's ducat issues under Frederik V were never large, and examples that avoided export or melting are genuinely scarce.
